There’s something unmistakably refined about Howlite, a stone that looks like sculpted porcelain kissed with soft, natural veining. Calm in color yet rich in character, it brings a sense of spaciousness to the wrist, like exhaling without explanation.

Origin & History

Howlite is a borate mineral first identified in the 1800s in Nova Scotia, Canada, and named in honor of Canadian chemist/mineralogist Henry How. 

While it isn’t a “pharaoh-era” stone like Lapis or Malachite, Howlite has become a modern classic because of its clean, marbled look and its ability to pair elegantly with nearly anything. Historically and in contemporary jewelry trade, it has also been used as a stand-in for more expensive stones when dyed (most famously to imitate Turquoise).

• Because Howlite can absorb dyes easily, keep it away from anything that could transfer color (lotions/self-tanner/strongly pigmented products).
