Howlite
There’s something unmistakably refined about Howlite, a stone that looks like sculpted porcelain kissed with soft, natural veining. Calm in color yet rich in character, it brings a sense of spaciousness to the wrist, like exhaling without explanation.
Please note: 1) Sizing Info below; 2) Bead sizes and inclusion patterns vary naturally — no two stone beads or bracelets/necklaces are exactly alike; 3) Photos are taken in different lighting to capture the stone’s true personality, but screen settings and light can shift the exact tones you see in person.
Origin & History
Howlite is a borate mineral first identified in the 1800s in Nova Scotia, Canada, and named in honor of Canadian chemist/mineralogist Henry How.
While it isn’t a “pharaoh-era” stone like Lapis or Malachite, Howlite has become a modern classic because of its clean, marbled look and its ability to pair elegantly with nearly anything. Historically and in contemporary jewelry trade, it has also been used as a stand-in for more expensive stones when dyed (most famously to imitate Turquoise).
With Moe Gems, we honor Howlite for what it is in its natural form: understated, architectural, and quietly powerful.
Also known as:
- White Howlite
- “White Turquoise” (trade nickname, though it is not Turquoise)
Notes:
- Mineral composition: Calcium borosilicate hydroxide (borate mineral)
- Mohs hardness: ~3.5 (so it’s on the softer side for daily wear)
- Common appearance: White to soft gray with natural gray/black “webbing” veins
- Treatments: Howlite is often dyed in the market because it’s porous and absorbs color easily (especially to mimic Turquoise).
Stone Character & Appearance
The delicate gray veining in Howlite is part of its natural identity, like marble created by the earth rather than a pattern applied by hand. Some beads may show heavier webbing, cloud-like patches, or lighter “open” areas. Those variations are not flaws, they’re the stone’s natural fingerprint and a quiet sign of authenticity.
Eastern Healing Perspectives
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
Howlite is often approached energetically as a settling, cooling, Yin-leaning stone. In a TCM-inspired framework, it is commonly associated with smoothing the emotional “heat” that rises when the mind is overworked, overstimulated, or tense, encouraging a calmer flow of Qi.
TCM Notes on Medical Healing:
Traditionally associated with support for:
- Shen (spirit/mind) when restlessness, worry, or mental “noise” is high
- Calming internal agitation that can show up as tension headaches, jaw/neck tightness, or sleep that feels light rather than restorative
- A more grounded evening rhythm (supporting wind-down and dream recall)
TCM Pairings:
- Amethyst (evening calm + spiritual quiet)
- Smoky Quartz (steadiness for stress-load days)
Ayurveda
Howlite is typically described as energetically cooling and calming, making it a natural fit for Pitta-type intensity (overheating, irritability, mental sharpness that won’t shut off) and for Vata when the nervous system feels ungrounded.
Ayurveda Notes on Medical Healing:
Traditionally associated with:
- soothing an overactive mind (Vata)
- softening irritability/inner heat (Pitta)
- supporting a calmer throat-and-breath rhythm during stressful communication seasons (energetic association)
Recommended Ayurvedic Pairings:
- Rose Quartz (soft heart, gentle emotional support)
- Moonstone (nervous system calm + feminine cycle support, traditional energetics)
Other Cultural / Indigenous Uses
Howlite is a relatively modern “mainstream” jewelry stone compared to many ancient lapidary materials, so truly documentable ancient medical systems using Howlite specifically are limited. Where it shines is in contemporary energetic traditions, modern crystal culture, and the jewelry world’s appreciation for its natural marbled elegance.
Western Metaphysical Perspective
Howlite is widely associated with patience, calm communication, and emotional regulation, especially during seasons of overstimulation.
Minimal Pairings (intentional):
- Pearl (soft luxury + emotional steadiness)
- Labradorite (boundaries for empaths, calm confidence)
✨ Who This Stone Is For
Howlite is for the woman who holds a lot, thinks deeply, and still wants to move through life with softness. It’s for calmer mornings, quieter nights, and anyone curating a life that feels less chaotic and more intentional.
Cleansing & Charging
Think of this as care for something naturally delicate, not strict rules.
Cleanse:
- Soft, dry or slightly damp cloth only
- Smoke cleansing (sage, incense, palo santo) if you enjoy ritual
- Sound cleansing (chime, singing bowl)
Charge:
- Moonlight (gentle overnight charge; especially lovely near the full moon)
- Selenite (place beside or on a selenite plate for a calm, clean reset)
Care Notes:
- Do not soak Howlite in water. It is porous and can absorb moisture and everyday substances, which can dull it or lead to staining over time.
- Avoid harsh chemicals (perfume, cleaners, hair products) and store separately from harder gemstones to prevent scratching (Mohs ~3.5).
- Because Howlite can absorb dyes easily, keep it away from anything that could transfer color (lotions/self-tanner/strongly pigmented products).
