🌍 Origin & History

Ocean Jasper is an orbicular variety of chalcedony (a microcrystalline quartz) found exclusively along the remote northwestern coast of Madagascar—a location so difficult to access that it can only be mined at low tide by boat. First officially documented in 1922 but “rediscovered” around 1999 near the village of Marovato, it’s now one of Madagascar’s most prized and rare stones. Mining ceased in several key deposits, making high-grade material increasingly collectible.

Formed in ancient volcanic flows where silica-rich fluids crystallized in gas bubbles, Ocean Jasper displays orbs, swirls, and scenic layers that resemble sea foam, coral reefs, and ocean waves—hence its name.
