Soft Light • System Reset

There is a softness to Selenite that feels immediate.

A quiet, diffused glow that doesn’t demand attention, yet shifts the entire atmosphere around it.

It doesn’t overwhelm. It softens.

A piece often chosen when the body and mind need to slow down, recalibrate, and return to balance.

Please note: 1( Sizing Info below; 2) Bead sizes and inclusion patterns vary naturally — no two stone beads or bracelets/necklaces are exactly alike; 3) Photos are taken in different lighting; colors may appear slightly different in person depending on natural light, indoor light, and your screen settings.

Origin & History

Satin Spar is a variety of gypsum found in regions such as Morocco, Mexico, and parts of the United States. The name comes from the Greek word selēnē, meaning “moon,” referencing its soft, luminous glow.

Historically, selenite was used in ancient civilizations for both practical and symbolic purposes. The Romans used thin sheets of Satin Spar as early window panes, allowing light to pass through while diffusing harsh brightness. In sacred and ceremonial spaces, it was often associated with clarity, purity, and the movement of light.

While not a primary stone in classical Chinese or Ayurvedic gemstone traditions, gypsum-based minerals have long been recognized in traditional systems. In Chinese medicine, gypsum (Shi Gao) has been used for its cooling properties, particularly in clearing heat and supporting fluid balance in the body. This cooling and heat-clearing association has influenced modern energetic interpretations of the stone.

Also Known As

  • Selenite
  • Satin Spar
  • Gypsum
  • Desert Moonstone (trade name, though not a true moonstone)

Mineral & Geological Notes

  • Mineral Family: Sulfate
  • Composition: Calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO₄·2H₂O)
  • Mohs Hardness: 2
  • Formation: Evaporative sedimentary environments
  • Structure: Fibrous (in Satin Spar form)

This bracelet is made from Satin Spar, the fibrous form of gypsum commonly sold as “Selenite” in the jewelry trade.

Stone Character & Appearance

These stone beads display the signature Satin Spar structure, giving them a soft, silky glow that shifts as light moves across the surface.

You’ll notice:

  • Milky white to translucent body color
  • Subtle internal striations creating a soft “light band” effect
  • A luminous sheen rather than a high-gloss polish
  • Natural fibrous lines within the stone

This glowing effect is caused by the stone’s internal fiber structure, allowing light to move gently across each bead.  These are not imperfections. They are what give Satin Spar its signature presence.

Traditional & Historical Use

Gypsum-based minerals have historically been associated with cooling, clearing, and restoring balance in the body.

In traditional Chinese herbal systems, gypsum (Shi Gao) has been used to help clear excess heat, support hydration, and calm internal agitation. While this refers to the mineral in processed form, the energetic association has carried into modern stone interpretations.

Eastern Perspective

Satin Spar is often viewed as:

  • Strongly cooling and clearing
  • Supportive in reducing excess heat and internal overstimulation
  • Associated with the Lung and Stomach systems
  • Helpful in moving heat-related stagnation that may present as irritation, inflammation, or restlessness

Energetically, it is often chosen when the body feels:

  • Overstimulated or mentally overloaded
  • Restless or unable to settle
  • Depleted after prolonged stress

Ayurvedic Perspective

Satin Spar is considered:

  • Cooling and calming
  • Supportive for balancing excess Pitta (heat, intensity, inflammation)

Associated energy centers:

  • Crown Chakra
  • Upper energetic centers tied to clarity and mental stillness

Mineral Composition Insight

Selenite is composed of calcium sulfate with water content built directly into its structure.

This links it symbolically and energetically to:

  • Fluid balance within the body
  • Cooling and hydration
  • Flexibility within the body rather than rigidity
  • The release of built-up tension or internal density

The presence of water within the mineral itself is key.

This is a stone associated with softening, not forcing.

Functional Focus

  • Primary: Nervous System Regulation
  • Secondary: Cooling and Fluid Balance

Satin Spar is often associated with supporting:

  • Nervous system regulation during periods of overstimulation
  • Deeper rest when the body struggles to fully settle
  • Transition from overstimulation into recovery
  • Cooling the body during times of internal heat or inflammation
  • Recovery from stress, burnout, or energetic depletion
  • Mental clarity through quieting rather than stimulation
  • Supporting balance in the body during times of heat and irritation patterns that may reflect through the skin
  • Head tension associated with overstimulation

Often chosen during times when the body feels overwhelmed, overheated, or unable to slow down.

Care Notes:

  • Do not place in water, as Satin Spar is water soluble and can degrade over time

  • Avoid water and moisture exposure, as Selenite can gradually dissolve or lose its polish
  • Store separately to prevent scratching or damage
