Origin & History
Aquamarine is a blue to blue-green variety of Beryl, naturally colored by trace amounts of iron. Its name comes from the Latin aqua marina, meaning “water of the sea.” For thousands of years, Aquamarine has been associated with oceans, purification, calmness, and protection.
In Ancient Rome and Greece, Aquamarine was believed to be a sacred stone of the sea gods and was carried by sailors as a protective talisman for safe passage. It was also worn as an amulet to encourage courage, truthful speech, and calm communication. During the Middle Ages, Aquamarine was used in seals and talismans symbolizing clarity, wisdom, and integrity.
Aquamarine has historically been mined in regions including Brazil, Madagascar, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and parts of Africa. Natural Aquamarine commonly displays internal veils, feathering, and growth lines, all of which are visible in untreated stones like stones seen here.
At Moe Gems, Aquamarine is selected for its natural color, untreated clarity, and visible internal character—features that honor authenticity over artificial perfection.
Also known as:
- Blue Beryl
- Sea Water Beryl
- Aqua (trade shorthand)
Notes:
- Naturally occurring internal veils, feathering, and wispy inclusions are common
- Color ranges from pale icy blue to soft blue-green
- Untreated Aquamarine may appear lighter than heat-enhanced material
- Mohs hardness: 7.5–8 (durable, yet deserving of mindful care)
Stone Character & Appearance
Aquamarine is naturally translucent to transparent, often featuring internal veils and growth lines formed over millions of years. These characteristics are not flaws, but hallmarks of natural, untreated Aquamarine—each bead carrying its own quiet signature of time and formation.
