Rainbow (and Green) Fluorite
Spectrum of Quiet Clarity
There is something unmistakably calming about Rainbow Fluorite. Within each bead, layers of violet, sea-green, blue, and clear crystal formed slowly over millions of years, preserving the quiet rhythm of the Earth itself. Long valued across cultures for its beauty and symbolic association with clarity and balance, Rainbow Fluorite reflects both geological time and enduring natural elegance.
Please note: 1) Sizing Info below; 2) Bead sizes and inclusion patterns vary naturally — no two stone beads or bracelets/necklaces are exactly alike; 3) Photos are taken in different lighting to capture the stone’s true personality, but screen settings and light can shift the exact tones you see in person.
Origin & History
This Rainbow Fluorite originates from Zhejiang Province, China, one of the most important and historically significant sources of high-quality fluorite used in jewelry and ornamental carving. The fluorite from this region formed deep within hydrothermal veins, where mineral-rich fluids cooled slowly over millions of years, allowing layer upon layer of calcium fluoride crystal to develop. These growth phases created the natural color zoning seen in each bead, ranging from oceanic greens and purples to icy blue and translucent clear.
China has worked with fluorite for over two millennia. It was carved into decorative objects, scholar’s tools, and symbolic artifacts valued for both their visual beauty and their association with mental clarity and refinement. Fluorite’s glass-like luster and internal color layering made it especially prized among artisans.
The name fluorite comes from the Latin word fluere, meaning “to flow,” referencing its ancient use as a flux in metalworking to help metals melt more efficiently. This connection to transformation contributed to fluorite’s later symbolic association with energetic clearing and movement.
Outside of China, fluorite was also highly prized in ancient Rome, where it was carved into rare vessels called murrine. Roman scholars described these fluorite carvings as more valuable than gold, highlighting the stone’s longstanding connection to refinement and intellectual clarity.
Today, Zhejiang fluorite remains one of the most respected sources for natural Rainbow Fluorite, particularly material suitable for fine bead cutting due to its stability, translucency, and naturally layered coloration.
Also known as:
- Rainbow Fluorite
- Multi-Color Fluorite
- Fluorspar (historical and industrial term)
- Blue-Green Fluorite
- Purple Fluorite
- Green Fluorite
Notes:
- Mineral composition: Calcium Fluoride (CaF₂)
- Crystal system: Cubic
- Mohs hardness: 4
- Transparency: Transparent to translucent
- Luster: Vitreous (glass-like)
- Formation: Hydrothermal vein mineral
- Common associated minerals: Quartz, Calcite, Galena, Sphalerite
Color formation occurs due to trace elements and natural radiation exposure during crystal growth. Purple zones may form from rare earth element exposure and radiation effects, while green and blue tones form from structural variations within the crystal lattice.
Stone Character & Appearance
Rainbow Fluorite is one of the few minerals that naturally forms in multiple colors within a single crystal. These stone beads show natural internal zoning and translucency consistent with untreated Rainbow Fluorite. Dye treatments typically produce uniform surface coloration, which is not the case with these stones.
You may observe:
- Sea-green tones associated with iron and structural variations
- Violet zones formed through trace element interaction and radiation exposure
- Soft blue and teal layers
- Clear or icy zones representing purer calcium fluoride formation
- Internal veils, clouds, and gentle wisps confirming natural growth
These internal features are not imperfections. They are structural signatures formed over millions of years, making each sone bead entirely unique.
The translucency allows light to pass through the crystal, giving the bracelet depth, movement, and quiet luminosity.
Eastern Healing Perspectives

Cleansing & Charging
Rainbow Fluorite benefits from gentle care due to its moderate hardness and natural crystal structure.
Cleanse:
- Selenite charging plates or bowls
- Moonlight exposure
- Smoke cleansing
- Gentle dry cloth cleaning
Charge:
- Moonlight is ideal and safe for fluorite
- Selenite is highly compatible and supportive
Care Notes:
- Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, as fluorite may fade with extended UV exposure
- Avoid prolonged water soaking. Brief contact with water is safe, but soaking is not recommended
- Avoid ultrasonic cleaners
- Avoid impact or dropping, as fluorite is softer than quartz and may fracture
